DRESDEN – Brett Brochu has put together an impressive stats sheet during his rookie season with the Dresden Kings.
One of the few things missing was a shutout, and he fixed that Monday in his playoff debut.
Brochu made 20 saves in a 3-0 win over the Blenheim Blades in Game 1 of their Stobbs Division quarter-final in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
The third-place Kings scored once in each period before a crowd of 368 at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.
Brochu, 16, has been a workhorse for the Kings. The London Knights draft pick led the Stobbs Division in games played (38), minutes (2,168:27) and wins (27) in the regular season.
He had a 2.46 goals-against average and .915 save percentage while going 27-11-0.
Cory Lucier scored the winning goal in Game 1 on a power play at 18:47 of the first period.
The Kings had four power plays to the Blades’ none in the period. The shots were 23-10 for Dresden.
Dawson Winchester scored at 12:35 of the second for a 2-0 lead.
Greg Hay added another power-play goal with 1:17 left in the third.
The Kings went 2-for-6 with a man advantage. The sixth-place Blades were 0-for-1.
Blades goalie Chris Dewulf made 44 saves.
The Blades will host Game 2 in the best-of-seven series at 7 p.m. Thursday at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
Game 3 is at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dresden. Game 4 is at 7 p.m. Sunday in Blenheim.
