A big cause

Fund raising activities for the upcoming 2018 edition of the Walk for the Cure National Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness are intensifying and this week the public will get another opportunity to join in the effort with employees of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank at various branches as they mount the Pink Ribbon Dollar Drive.

On Friday, August 31, clients visiting the bank will see large pink ribbons in the various branches and they are invited to line up silver dollars to fill up the length of the ribbons.

In some locations, where space may not allow for the laying out of the ribbon, a jar will be placed nearby to collect the dollar coins.

This drive is one of many mounted by the staff of the bank to raise the much-needed funds prior to the actual national walk on October 7. They have also been raising funds via a flea market, cakes and food sales among staff, casual days where staff pay to wear jeans to work on Fridays, among other innovative fund raisers.

Last Saturday, fifty-one aspiring artists, among them three children, headed to the Radisson Aquatica Hotel for the Paint for the Cure, another unique fundraiser where patrons got  the opportunity to paint a picture under the direction of Yasmin Vizcarrondo of the four and half year-old Paint and Groove business.

This is the third year for the Paint for the Cure event, and this year’s picture was entitled Love, Gratitude and Appreciation and showcased a bouquet of pink roses which symbolized gratitude, the colour pink which symbolized grace and elegance and the pink ribbon which signifies breast cancer awareness.

The Barbados Walk Manager Carolann Nurse thanked the participants and the sponsors including Radisson Aquatica, Chefette, Laurie Dash Craft Shop, Field Tech Staging Solutions and Sugar and Spice Custom Cakes who supplied patrons with sugar cookies in the shape of a pink ribbon.

The sold-out event which was almost exclusively attended by women in the past years had a record five men attending and participating. (PR)
