Impoverished members of society in Barbados are looking to various entities for help this back-to-school season.
President of Eden Lodge Youth Charitable Trust told the media that despite the charity’s financial setbacks they have been seeing more persons coming to the organization in dire need of assistance.
“Every day you get a call. Up to [yesterday] I got a call from a lady; someone told her to go to welfare and because government quite frankly does not have the resources [it] used to, people have to be turning to organizations like ours for assistance every day,” he said, adding that persons approach the Trust in the midst of dire circumstances.
“Somebody lost their house by fire, [or was] evicted because they have been laid off, [or] the breadwinner of the house has been deceased. [There are] different things that happen on a day-to-day basis and persons refer them to an organization like ours. There is not enough [funding] to go around because there are other projects [being done],” Grazette said, adding that in some instances when they call businesses seeking sponsorship, there is hostility. One person asked him “why he does not find something better to do with his time?”
“So, he is saying to me that I am not doing anything good with my time to help the poor people in Barbados who are deserving of the help for whatever reason,” he said.
His comments came as the Trust presented back-to-school items for some of the less fortunate in the community. The donations included books, stationery and uniforms.
The parents and students were also given a stern warning from Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde who encouraged them to cherish the items they received in spite of the hard financial challenges being faced by charities.
