Twenty-six participants from the Diabetes Association of Barbados Camp Wellness enjoyed the last day of their summer camp with a consumerism shopping game at Carlton and A1 Supermarkets, Blackrock this afternoon.
Speaking to Barbados TODAY Nicole Griffith said the inaugural camp arose because there was an overwhelming number of persons who registered for the diabetic camp, Camp Pride, although the children were not diabetic.
“Camp Wellness is a camp for persons who have type 2 diabetes. We do have persons who may be deemed a bit obese for their age and we have persons who have no known illnesses. Camp Wellness came about [because] the Diabetes Association has Camp Pride and it is only for children [with] diabetes. [Usually, persons who don’t have diabetes register for that camp.] So, we’ve seen the need for persons to get their children into healthier habits and decided to start Camp Wellness,” Griffith said, adding that the consumerism activity held today sought to teach children that they can have a healthy meal on a low budget.
“Camp Wellness is not only a camp about health and illness. It also [addresses] leadership and health as it relates to your actual physical body, foot care, eye care, dental. We’ve had persons coming in and doing dental checks; we also had a consumerism specialist [teaching them]. That is what the game is about today - seeing if they can budget with what they have, buy local products and be able to have a healthy meal with a particular amount of money as most people who come into the supermarket only have $100 to spend,” she said.
The participants truly enjoyed the event as they charged through the aisles trying to find the ingredients to make their three healthy dishes. From the sheer laughter echoing through the supermarket, it was evident that the students had a great time participating in the consumerism activity. (LG)
