Shayne Moseley is now in a batting class of his own as far as the top local one-day Championship is concerned.
The ever-improving CounterPoint Wanderers and Barbados Pride opener became the first ever player to amass 600 runs in a season in the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Super Cup Championship last Sunday en route to a knock of 67, albeit in a losing cause by two wickets with three balls remaining against record eight-time champions Massy Stores Spartan in the quarter-finals at Dayrells Road.
Left-hander Moseley finished with 620 runs including two centuries and three half-centuries, at an average of 68.88.
After Wanderers, the champions of last season, drew a bye in the first round, the 24-year-old Moseley's scores were: 27 v Gladiola at Rices; 83 v Ince Transport MTW at Pine Basin; 28 v ICBL Empire at Dayrells Road; 84 v Barbados Youth at Dayrells Road; 139 v IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire at Dayrells Road; 122 v BDFSP at Dayrells Road; 36 v Sagicor Life UWI at 3Ws Oval; 34 v Nicholls Baking Combermere at Waterford 'A' and 67 v Spartan at Dayrells Road.
Only one other player - veteran Ryan Wiggins of Bayview Hospital YMPC - has ever scored 500 runs in a season.
Wiggins, now aged 34, achieved the feat two years ago when YMPC captured the title for the first time in 21 seasons and their second all told.
In 11 matches, Wiggins made 526 runs including one century and four half-centuries, at an average of 47.26. He hit 125 against MTW at Pine Basin in the third series, with half-centuries of 62 v Yorkshire at Beckles Road (Series 2); 63 v Wanderers at Beckles Road (Series 4); 81 v BDFSP at Beckles Road (Series 5) and 83 off UWI at 3Ws Oval (semi-finals).
Moseley was understandably ecstatic at achieving his new record.
“It was a great feeling to reach 600 runs,” he told this writer.
“It was my goal at the beginning of the season but having set such a goal, it seemed like a mountain. But I tried to break it down as much as possible, focus on consistent preparation and performances so as to achieve it. It was quite overwhelming for me.”
Yet, he conceded that it was a matter of bitter/sweet with Wanderers losing what turned out to be a very exciting match as fortunes fluctuated.
“It didn't end the way I envisioned. It's all about getting my team over the line, so in spite of the achievement, it was a hard pill to swallow not being able to go a step further in the competition.”
Moseley has been involved in five partnerships of over 100 for the first wicket this season including four in the Super Cup. Four of them have been with Jason “Grass Man” Greene including one in the Sagicor General Twenty20 Tournament, and the other with Barbados Pride and West Indies Test player, Kraigg Brathwaite.
In Round 5 of the Super Cup, Moseley (84) and Greene (63) added 134 in 19.1 overs off Barbados Youth in an eight-wicket win, finishing on 288 for two off 41.3 overs.
They followed in Series 6 by putting on 193 in 28.5 overs in a total of 404 for four off 50 overs against Yorkshire who lost by 23 runs. Moseley scored 139 off 131 balls with 15 fours and four sixes and Greene 101 off 90 deliveries containing 14 fours and two sixes.
And for the records, there were also two centuries in Yorkshire's 381 for eight by way of Athelbert Brathwaite (116 - 82 balls, 15 fours and 6 sixes) and Armani Best (110 - 102 balls, 16 fours, 1 six). It was the first time four centuries were scored in a Super Cup match.
Next came a stand of 121 in 16.3 overs in a total of 291 for three off 43.5 overs in a winning cause against BDFSP. Moseley slammed 122 off 124 balls with 14 fours and two sixes and Greene 53.
Against Spartan, Moseley and Brathwaite, who top-scored with 89 off 107 balls including seven fours and two sixes, added 147 in 28.2 overs as Wanderers amassed 280 for eight off 50 overs.
Spartan responded with 284 for eight off 49.3 overs.
In the quarter-finals of the Sagicor General T20, Moseley (39) and Greene (66) put on 111 in a total of 165 for six off 20 overs against ESA Field Pickwick at 3Ws Oval. Wanderers won by 16 runs.
“It's a good feeling to be involved in five 100-run partnerships,” Moseley remarked. “It's something that's quite rare now in local cricket and to be able to build innings consistently is a great boost for any team.”
All told, in 53 Super Cup matches, Moseley has scored 1677 runs including five centuries, at an average of 32.88. Four of his hundreds are for Wanderers - the other is for Carlton - among them a memorable 101 in last year's Final against Crane Resort St. Catherine at the Windward Club ground, Lucas Street.
That was in a total of 228 for nine off 50 overs as he struck four fours and five sixes in a 148-ball knock. And it was also only the fourth century in a Final. The others to achieve the feat are: Mark Sealy (Wanderers) 115 v Empire in 1993; Vonrick Nurse (Carlton) 124 v LIME (now Gladiola) in 2009 and Lendl Simmons (Carlton) 120 v St. Catherine in 2011 - all at Kensington Oval.
Further statistics show that in five Super Cup matches at Dayrells Road this season including four in succession, 3053 runs including six centuries (with the record four hundreds and 785 runs in Series 6) were amassed for the loss of 69 wickets in 483.3 overs. That's a rate of 6.31 runs an over.
Of that total, Wanderers scored 1565 runs while losing only 26 wickets in 234.5 overs. Hence, they scored at 6.66 runs per over.
Moseley had a solid inaugural regional first-class 2017-2017 season, scoring 643 runs including two hundreds and four half-centuries, at an average of 37.82.
He will no doubt be next looking forward to making his regional one-day debut in Super50 Championship, which is slated for October.
For the moment, however, Shayne Akeel Richard Moseley must be the most talked about batsman in one-day cricket in Barbados as he savours his record success in the BCA Super Cup Championship.
