National football players on professional contract in Hungary

National players Rashad Jules and Thierry Gale departed Barbados yesterday for Hungary and will not feature in tonight’s international friendly against Cuba at the Barbados Football Association Wildey, Astro Turf.

Jules, captain of the Bajan Tridents along with 16-year-old Gale, Barbados’ youngest national player, are on a six-day trial with Hungarian top tier football club Budapest Honved.

Barbados’ Technical Director Ahmed Mohammed confirmed with Barbados Today that both players are in Hungary hoping to land a professional contract with the European base club and will, therefore, miss today’s opener at 7 p.m along with the second match on Wednesday, August 29 at 8 p.m.

“Our main goal is to facilitate our players with professional contracts and scholarships. This is the first time two of our players have gone to that side [Hungary]. If Thierry and Jules do well then it will give our other national players an opportunity to be part of other clubs in Hungary,” Mohammed said.

He explained that international opportunities were around the corner for national attacking midfielder Hadan Holligan and teenage forward Deshon ‘Eto’ Howell who will both be going to Gibraltar once their contracts are finalized.

This is a first-time opportunity for Gale, but 26-year-old Jules who played semi-professional with Old Road Football Club in Antigua already had a bit of experience.  He told Barbados Today the chance to go professional is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and that he intends to take it seriously.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for any Barbadian footballer, and it is a great opportunity which I intend to grasp,” said Jules who isn’t worried about missing both friendlies against Cuba.

“My national team, we are not short on quality in any area, and I think that in my area we have people to replace me. I know Barbados will do well and I look forward to seeing us going up against Cuba,” he said.

Both players will be back in time to travel for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Federation Nations League on September 6 against host Guyana.
