OPP use DNA to craft suspect composite in cold case

Police are hoping a new suspect composite, crafted using DNA evidence, will reignite the investigation into the 1988 slaying of Thera Dieleman.

OPP on Tuesday released a never-before-seen snapshot of the suspect they’re searching for, just shy of three decades after Dieleman’s body was found strangled and beaten near the front door of her Innerkip home, north of Woodstock in Oxford County.

OPP used DNA found at the crime scene to develop snapshots of the suspect in Thera Dielemans death. The picture on the left is what the man may have looked line in 1988, the right is present day. (OPP handout)

DNA technology company Parabon Nano Labs was tapped to create a sketch of what the suspect may have looked like in 1988 and another of what he could look like today. Police warned the DNA-crafted pictures are approximations and don’t take into account non-genetic factors like scars, hairstyles or facial hair.

Police are hoping the new details will lead to tips to solve the Sept. 16, 1988 cold case. There’s a $50,000 reward available for anyone with information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the dedicated tip line toll-free at 1-844-677-9414 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
