Wallaceburg woman remembered for her contributions

A Wallaceburg woman is being remembered for her tireless efforts giving back to her community over the years.

Catherine Tiffin, 81, was killed in a crash Tuesday on Highway 40.

Whether it was helping to feed schoolchildren, or assisting with various events, she never stopped caring, said her longtime friend, Elaine Lewis.

“She was so dedicated and devoted,” Lewis said on Thursday. “She had such a strong will to go ahead and do things.”

Lewis, former co-ordinator for the Chatham-Kent Student Nutrition Program, first met Tiffin back in the early 1970s. They also served as guide leaders together.

Tiffin was a past-president of CUPE, worked at the Wallaceburg Childcare Learning Centre, Fiesta Restaurant, and cooked at A.A. Wright Public School for over 17 years.

She also volunteered at the Royal Canadian Legion, WAMBO, the Sydenham District Hospital Auxiliary, soccer, fireworks committee and helped to establish the Selkirk History Faire.

“She wasn’t afraid to tackle anything,” Lewis said. “She affected a lot of people and was certainly a light in this community.”

A memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 in Wallaceburg on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. with visitation to follow until 4 p.m. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson St. in Wallaceburg.

Remembrances to the Royal Canadian Legion may be left at the funeral home. Online tributes may be left at www.CavanaghFuneralHome.ca
