Browne finally leaves NCF

The long anticipated departure of Cranston Browne from the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) has finally come to pass, with the chief executive officer serving his final day today.

Barbados TODAY understands that Browne informed staff at the NCF that today was his last day on the job.

There has been no official statement issued by the NCF and attempts to contact Minister of Culture and the Creative Economy John King for a comment on the development were unsuccessful. However, it is reported that Browne, who reportedly earned $142, 000 annually, had accepted a separation package.

Barbados TODAY had reported at the end of July that Browne’s tenure would come to an end following Crop Over, and he would be replaced by veteran broadcaster Carol Roberts.

Browne had also indicated at the time that he had not been told anything even though he had said enough to suggest that his departure was imminent.

“You just got to wait and see . . . . A few more days or weeks. You just got to wait and see,” he told Barbados TODAY at the time.

In April 2013, Browne was appointed interim CEO to serve until April 21, 2014.  An official release had stated then that the board of the NCF would continue its search for a chief executive by widely advertising the post in an attempt to secure a candidate for a longer-term contract. However, Browne’s tenure was subsequently extended with former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Cabinet Minister Donville Inniss, who in July of this year stoutly defended his former administration’s decision to renew Browne’s contract just before the May 24 general election.

Since the election, which swept the Barbados Labour Party to office, a number of political appointees have been shown the door, including General Manager of the state run Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation Doug Hoyte and his counterpart at the Transport Board Sandra Forde, both of whom reportedly accepted packages.

There have also been a number of unexplained sackings at the National Housing Corporation, including that of the General Manager Lanette Napoleon-Young as the new Government attempts to clean house and to put its own team in place.
