Evil spirits

If you can’t handle your liquor leave it alone!

That was the reprimand today from Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant to 35-year-old Rene Antonio Chandler of Mount Friendship, St Michael, who pleaded guilty to wounding and criminal damage while under the influence of alcohol.

According to Sergeant Edwin Pinder, on September 1, Chandler, a quality control operator, and a friend were headed to the Pine East West Boulevard, and were offered a lift by Rodney Sealy, who was driving a Barbados Water Authority truck.

When they got to their destination Chandler refused to disembark the vehicle, and after Sealy opened the door for the accused, Chandler struck him with a piece of wood on his head.

The unnamed friend intervened and was able to pull Chandler out, but he sneaked back into the tray without notice and smashed the rear windscreen while Sealy was driving away.

Attorney-at-law Harry Husbands told the magistrate today that Chandler and his friend had been out drinking before the incident.

In pleading with Cuffy-Sargeant to impose a lenient sentence on the first-time offender, the lawyer said his client was remorseful and was willing to pay compensation as the incident “was totally out of character”.

Chandler also admitted that he had been drinking on the day, something which he said had become “a habit lately”.

The magistrate ordered Chandler to attend counselling for his drinking problem and forbade him from entering any vehicle belonging to any Government department or agency.

Chandler, who returns to the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on October 19, must also stay away from Sealy until the issue of compensation has been addressed and the case adjudicated.
