Kings knock off Canadiens

DRESDEN – The Dresden Kings are only two weeks into the Provincial Junior Hockey League season, but they already have a statement win.

Nolan VandenBoorn continued his hot start with two more goals Friday in a 4-1 win over the Lakeshore Canadiens before 212 fans at Lambton-Kent Memorial Arena.

The Canadiens (1-1-0-1) are the defending Stobbs Division champions.

Brantly Kuipers and Eric Carter also scored for the Kings, who are in first place with a 4-0-0-0 record.

Brett Brochu made 29 saves for the win.

Kuipers scored in the first period and Carter in the second for a 2-0 lead.

VandenBoorn’s two goals in the third sandwiched one by Lakeshore’s Blake Bain.

Canadiens goalie Erik Morneau made 26 saves.

VandenBoorn leads the Kings with nine goals and 11 points in four games.

The Kings will visit the Amherstburg Admirals on Sunday and host the Essex 73’s at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Sportsnet covers Grand Slam

The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season begins in Chatham with the Princess Auto Elite 10.

Ten men’s teams and 10 women’s teams will compete from Wednesday to Sunday at Thames Campus Arena.

The field includes four Olympic gold medallists (Jennifer Jones, Anna Hasselborg, Brad Jacobs and Brad Gushue) and five more skips who have won world championships (Rachel Homan, Niklas Edin, Kevin Koe, Glenn Howard and Reid Carruthers).

The men’s teams are skipped by: Carruthers, Edin, Koe, Howard, Jacobs, Gushue, John Epping, Jason Gunnlaugson, Bruce Mouat and Ross Paterson.

The women’s teams are skipped by: Jones, Hasselborg, Homan, Chelsea Carey, Tracy Fleury, Nina Roth, Casey Scheidegger, Jamie Sinclair, Silvana Tirinzoni and Laura Walker.

Sportsnet, which owns and operates the Grand Slam of Curling, will cover the final four days. Various draws will be on Sportsnet, Sportsnet Now, Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 360.

Sportsnet will cover the round-robin draws at 12, 4 and 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, the women’s quarter-finals are at 12 p.m., the men’s quarter-finals at 4 p.m., and the semifinals at 8 p.m.

The finals are Sunday, Sept. 30. The women play at 12 p.m. (Sportsnet and Sportsnet Now) and the men at 4 p.m. (Sportsnet One and Sportsnet Now).

Konecny scores in loss

Travis Konecny of Clachan scored his first goal of the NHL preseason Friday in the Philadelphia Flyers’ 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Islanders in Allentown, Pa.

Konecny, 21, is starting his third NHL season.

He set career-highs last season with 24 goals, 23 assists and 47 points in 81 games for the Flyers.

At Winnipeg, Jets forward Seth Griffith of Wallaceburg had his second preseason assist in a 4-3 overtime win against the Calgary Flames.

Griffith signed with the Jets as a free agent in the off-season. He played last season in the Buffalo Sabres’ system.

Pickleball registration

The Chatham-Kent Pickleball Club is offering a discount on membership for the 2019 season.

Adults (ages 16-64) pay $30 and seniors (ages 65 and older) pay $25. Club members receive discounts on playing at St. Clair College’s Thames Campus HealthPlex and on club activities, such as lessons, league play, clinics and tournaments.
