Jennings, Whiteye in TV series

Margaret Jennings of Charing Cross is the lead assistant coach for the Ryerson Rams’ women’s hockey team, but she had a new squad this summer.

Jennings and Rams head coach Lisa Haley worked with a team of Indigenous teenage girls from across Canada.

Cassie Whiteye of Moraviantown played on the team.

The team, called Hit the Ice, was filmed for a documentary TV series with the same name that airs on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

This was the first time in seven seasons the show featured a girls’ team.

The team went through a training camp and played at the Beantown Classic showcase tournament in Boston in July.

“It’s been such a rewarding experience already, working with these players,” Haley said on the Rams’ website. “They are unbelievably keen and eager to learn and make the most of their time together.

“This is a new experience for myself and (Margaret Jennings). It’s also given the two of us a special opportunity to work together in a new environment, which will only make our relationship stronger when we return to Ryerson.”

Hit the Ice is scheduled to air this winter.

Blades sign two forwards

The Blenheim Blades have filled out their roster by signing forwards Cam Symons of Kingsville and Chase Henry of Blenheim.

Symons is the Blades’ 16-year-old. He had seven goals and 14 assists in 31 games last season with the Chatham-Kent Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Cyclones.

Henry, 18, had two assists in 18 games with the Blades last season. He began the season with the Chatham Maroons and had two assists in nine games.

Symons and Henry each has one goal in the Provincial Junior Hockey League preseason.

The Blades will play their exhibition finale at 7 p.m. Sunday at Blenheim Memorial Arena against the Wheatley Omstead Sharks.

Their regular-season opener is Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Wallaceburg Lakers.

Kings ink goalie Brochu

The Dresden Kings have signed rookie goalie Brett Brochu of Tilbury.

Brochu – a London Knights’ draft pick – is the Kings’ 16-year-old player. (PJHL teams are allowed one 16-year-old.)

Brochu was selected by the Knights in the sixth round, 114th overall, in this year’s Ontario Hockey League draft. He played for the Chatham-Kent Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Cyclones last season.

The Kings’ No. 1 goalie last season, Brendan Johnston, is currently working out west, said general manager Jason Badder. Johnston, 21, will be an overager if he returns this season.

The Kings will play a home-and-home exhibition series with the Flags at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dresden and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Mooretown.

They’ll begin the regular season by visiting the Wheatley Omstead Sharks on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
