A 56-year-old unemployed man, accused of stealing from Nu Look Boutique, is now on remand at HMP Dodds.
Mark David Anthony Bascombe, of Ellis Village, Halls Road, St Michael, allegedly entered The City store as a trespasser and stole seven pairs of boots worth $2,420, as well as 11 pairs of sneakers worth $2, 795, ten haversacks worth $1,750 and 48 t-shirts and four pairs of pants worth $300 belonging to Barry Millar.
Sergeant Edwin Pinder objected to bail based on the strength of the evidence against Bascombe. He also told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that lawmen were still on the hunt for an accomplice and the Crown feared the accused would hamper those investigations.
However, Bascombe argued for bail saying he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
“At the time it is unfortunate that the fella see me looking into the show window,” the accused said, while explaining his evening routine to Cuffy-Sargeant.
He also revealed that he had been “clean of any alcohol, drugs or cocaine” for three years.
“I clean. . . . ‘[It’s] two years [since] I get out of Verdun [House] and come out and opened a business.”
The accused also claimed that he was working at one of the popular international hotel chains operating on the island.
However, his application was denied and he was remanded until October 3.
