One man is expected to know his fate when he returns to the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on November 19 while his co-accused will go to trial.
Seventeen-year-old Renaldo Christopher Courtney Jordan pleaded not guilty to stealing 20 sheets of permaclad worth $4,600 and 25 pieces of lumber worth $734.40 as well as a chicken plucker worth $3,500 belonging to Omar Jemmott while his 31-year-old co-accused Atiba Tafari Gooding pleaded guilty to the crime which was committed between August 8 and 19. He also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.
According to Sergeant Rudy Pilgrim, Jemmott secured his building which is under construction but returned to find the items missing.
“I did not steal nothing . . . I did not break into the house,” Gooding said as he revealed that two other men had committed the crime while he was only the salesman.
“It wasn’t me. I don’t know nothing about no chicken plucker . . . I never break into nobody house . . . .I sold the wood and galvanise for $1,000.
“Sir, since 2012 I learn from my lesson and move on with my life. I have a little farm, a lil boat and fish pods out there now. I trying to better myself. Jail isn’t for me sir,” Gooding said.
However, an unpaid $3,000 fine due in a month apparently saved Gooding from being remanded.
“I am not going to derail you . . . you have a fine to pay next month. If I keep you on remand right now you will face those two years in prison. You seem to be trying to better yourself
. . . and you need to be out there working in order to get the money to pay the fine,” Magistrate Douglas Frederick said as he adjourned the case until November 19 when Gooding will know his fate. He is now on $4,000 bail.
Meanwhile, Jordan, his co-accused was granted $3,000 bail.
He returns to court with his attorney-at-law Mohia Ma’at on January 8 next year when the case against him will continue.
