Turney admits to using weed

A 48-year-old man, who admitted to using cannabis, has been slapped with a $3,000 fine which he must pay within the next two months.

The fine was imposed on Raphael Pernell Turney, of Mahogany Lane, St Michael, after he pleaded guilty in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court to possession, possession with intent to supply and traffic, as well as cultivation of the illegal drug.

As a result of information received, police executed a search warrant at Turney’s residence on September 4.

“Yes it is mine. I does cook and make tea with it,” he reportedly told police after $595 worth of contraband was discovered in the form of a plant in his backyard.

“I had that for my personal uses . . . to cook in food and to make tea. It was not for trafficking or anything so. If it was, they would have found more,” the accused told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant on Wednesday.

If Turney fails to settle the amount by November 5 he will have to spend six months at HMP Dodds.
