$10 of trouble

Two men accused of committing the same crime received different fates when they appeared before a Bridgetown magistrate.

They are 33-year-old Shiamar Tashaka Callendar of Risk Road, Fitts Village, St James and 21-year-old Rakeeme Tyreek Wilson, of Eckstein Village, St Michael.

Both accused pleaded not guilty on Monday to robbing Kevin Williams of $10 in cash on October 18.

Station Sergeant Carrison Henry objected to bail on the grounds that the offence was a serious one despite the amount allegedly stolen.

The prosecutor further pointed out that Callendar was known to the court and was currently on bail while Wilson was not known to the court but was the co-accused.

However, defence attorney Vonda Pile strongly argued that her client, Wilson, was a good candidate for bail as he was totally unknown to any court in the country.

“He is not known . . . and where a person does not have a history I believe that the court should look favourably on that . . . .He is gainfully employed for a period of time, it is not that he has been a parasite on society . . . .
And I ask that the court not see him as a lump but as an individual. He has an unblemished record, not even for a traffic violation,” the attorney submitted.

In his application Callender, who is self-represented, argued that he was presently on bail for simple assault in a case involving his girlfriend.

He further explained that he was at a club drinking a beverage when the police arrested him “just because a man say he leave home with me.

“If you check you will see that I am not a flight risk,” he added.

However, Magistrate Douglas Frederick told Callender that he had an “uphill task of getting bail because you are always in here.”

Frederick said Wilson was in a different position and warned the first-time accused against “being led astray.”

He then released Wilson on $3,000 bail to return to the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on March 5, 2019, and remanded Callender to HMP until November 19.
