Barbados to host international conference on higher education

A four-day international conference aimed at showcasing the emerging local, regional and international research that can enhance policy and practice at all levels in education gets underway here on Sunday.

The sixth International Conference on Higher Education will be held under the theme “Modern Education and Economic Stimulation: Innovation, Praxis and Sustainability” and is being coordinated by the Higher Education Development Unit under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training.

The Chief Strategy Officer for Hecate Energy, in the United States, David Wilhelm, will be the featured speaker at the opening ceremony. Wilhelm is facilitating the company’s efforts to develop solar, wind and gas projects in international markets such as Africa, Pakistan and Jordan.

The organisers said that his focus during the conference will be on the potential for economic growth through the development of the renewable energy sector, and how training and development can harness that latent potential across indigenous post-secondary institutions.

They said that following the opening ceremony on Sunday,  the other days will consist of practical interaction that will provide research-based and practical strategies that address emerging best practices across the education landscape; varying viewpoints by multiple presenters on specific issues; panel discussions, interaction and dialogue among delegates which demonstrate practical applications from solutions-based research; and the opportunity for graduate students and student teachers to share in a dynamic learning environment.

On Monday, the main feature will be a luncheon at noon with Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Wilfred Abrahams to be attended by stakeholders in the renewable energy sector.

The objective of the session is to explore collaborative opportunities that could impact the renewable energy sector in Barbados, and members of the media will get an opportunity to engage participants prior to the luncheon, the organisers said.
