C-K job fair attracts many first-time participants

Accurcast needs to hire employees for several positions so the Wallaceburg company decided to take part in the CK Works Community Job Fair, held in Chatham.

Julie Buliga, in human resources at Accurcast, said this is the first job fair the company has taken part in.

The event, held at the Bradley Convention Centre on Tuesday, was expected to attract more than 500 job seekers.

“We’ve enjoyed it and we’ve learned from others and we have many resumes here,” she said. “We’re quite happy.”

The manufacturer of aluminum die castings for the automotive industry is looking for a production supervisor, CMM technician, process technician, mould maker, industrial electrician, millwright and general labour.

Buliga said the company faces issues with employee turnover and an aging workforce.

However, like many similar companies taking part, workers are offered competitive wages, benefits and a pension plan.

Whyte’s Foods Inc., a Quebec-based food processing company that recently announced plans to open a facility in Wallaceburg, was also among the more than 45 employers attending Tuesday’s job fair.

“We’re getting a lot of candidates, good candidates, more on the general labour side,” said Karine Leclerc, human resources director.

However, she added not a lot of applications had been received for specialized positions such as a millwright.

This is the first job fair Whyte’s has attended in Chatham-Kent, but the company has participated in several in Quebec.

“We love it, because that’s a way to see people, to get an idea of the person,” Leclerc said. “We see the resume and we see the person right away, it’s kind of faster to get a feeling compared to just receiving a resume through the Internet.”

Joelle Deed, of Chatham, is looking for either a general labour or customer service position.

“It’s a good turnout and I feel confident,” she said of landing one of the more than 300 positions that were available.

This was Deed’s first time attending a job fair and she was surprised at the number of positions available.

“It’s very convenient, for sure.”

This was also the first job fair Kristine Broad attended.

The Dresden resident has a job, but added, “you don’t like to close any opportunities . . . so I’m just seeing what’s out there.”

Broad was impressed with the turnout and the quality of jobs.

“I hope that it grows even bigger and better for next year,” she said.

“So far, the job fair has been going pretty good,” said Steve Cameron, production manager at RS Technologies in Tilbury. “We got a lot of applicants for the positions that I have open.”

He said this is the third job fair he has been at so far this year.

“It’s a great forum.”
