PUNE, India, CMC – Shai Hope narrowly missed out on a third career hundred as West Indies rallied to a competitive total against India in the third One-Day International of the five-match series here Saturday.
Sent in at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, West Indies recovered from 227 for eight in the 44th over, to reach 283 for nine off their 50 overs.
The right-handed Hope top-scored with a typically fluent 95 off 113 balls while Ashley Nurse struck an aggressive 40 off 22 deliveries. The in-form Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with 37, captain Jason Holder got 32 while opener Kieran Powell made 21.
Seamer Jasprit Bumrah was the best bowler with four for 35 while left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav finished with two for 52.
West Indies were in trouble early when Bumrah snatched two cheap wickets to leave the innings in turmoil at 55 for three in the 14th over.
Chandrapaul Hemraj (15) fell in the sixth over off a skyer, wicketkeeper MS Dhoni running back to square leg to take an excellent diving catch off Bumrah while Powell followed in the ninth over, nicking the same bowler to Rohit Sharma at slip.
When veteran Marlon Samuels was caught at the wicket off seamer Khaleel Ahmed in the 14th over for nine, the Windies were tottering.
However, Hope struck six fours and three sixes to rescue the innings – first in a 56-run, fourth wicket stand with Hetmyer and then in a 76-run, sixth wicket partnership with Holder.
Hope eventually departed in the 44th over with triple figures in sight, yorked by the impressive Bumrah and it was left to Nurse, batting at number nine, to propel the innings late with four fours and two sixes.
