Hotel workers across Barbados may be getting a Christmas windfall at a time when hundreds of their colleagues in the public sector are being placed on the breadline as part of the Government’s restructuring programme.
Deputy general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Dwaine Paul indicated last night that he expects a settlement of salary and wages negotiations with the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) within the next week.
Following a meeting Thursday night at the BWU’s Solidarity House Headquarters with workers, the second for that day, Paul told Barbados TODAY he was optimistic there may be an agreement in a pay dispute that has been ongoing for more than a year now.
“We believe that we are in a better position now to settle those negotiations because we have been given a mandate, and we will be taking that mandate to the BHTA, hopefully sometime next week. We are hopeful that once we take that mandate to them that we can get a positive response in terms of closing those negotiations,” he said.
He also expects the union will be taking another, this time new, proposal to the BHTA shortly.
Paul did not specify the level of increases being sought, but hoped they would be retroactive and begin before the start of the season.
The last time hotel workers received a salary increase was in December 2015 when their pay went up by eight per cent.
