Vercouteren said his 36 years as a municipal councillor have been an interesting experience that has taught him a lot about local governance.
“I have have tried many times to work on keeping taxes to the citizens as low as possible each year,” he said. “I am not happy or satisfied when we have to go the citizens and try to explain why more taxes.”
He added, “I have experience and have tried to keep the cost and extra expenses to be as low as possible.
“I know I only get one vote , but I always try and make it count,” Vercouteren said.
He said he has voted no on many major projects, such as the Capitol Theatre and several other large projects the municipality could not have financed without more taxes.
“If re-elected, I will continue to support lower taxes,” Vercouteren said.
Vercouteren said he has been told by staff that he has only missed one meeting on Chatham-Kent council .
“I am elected to be there.”
