Green paper calls for better use of wastewater

One Government Minister wants to see more of the island’s sewage being put to good use.

In fact, Minister of Youth and Community Empowerment Adrian Forde is calling for wastewater to be treated and used for agricultural purposes and for flushing toilets.

Forde, who was speaking in Parliament on Tuesday on the Green Paper on Planning Law Reform, said this was especially necessary as Barbados continued its development.

Pointing out that farmers have complained bitterly over the years that they were not getting enough water to satisfy their needs, Forde said it would make sense for waste water to be treated and used for agricultural purposes.

He also said it would also be wise for hotels and restaurants seeking to set up shop in Barbados to come with a sewage treatment plan.

“It may not be in the minds of Barbadians at this moment, but at some point we must have tertiary treatment plans where the water is used for agriculture at the least. I am saying we have to use circular Barbados to its full effect, where our waste deposit is utilized not only for bio-methane but in a proper treatment plan this water can satisfy the farmers in the dry season.

“I think this is very important. It can [also] be used for flushing toilets. We can use water in a variety of ways around the home . . . What I am saying is that we are going to have to make economic decisions that engage a human development aspect to it. That is what this sustainable development plan speaks to. This legislation must be fit for purpose,” said Forde.

Among other things, the Green Paper examines issues, considers options and makes recommendations for fundamental reform of the town planning legislation.

Forde told his parliamentary colleagues that any plan to develop Barbados should carefully consider densely populated areas.

Using Bridgetown as an example, he said it should be “a hub” for high-rise building while ensuring that it maintained its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
