He robbed a Ukrainian visitor of her belongings and will now have to spend 12 months in prison for his crime.
The sentence was imposed on Theophilus Theo Holder yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick.
Station sergeant Carrison Henry said the tourist, Kateryna Kokot, left her belongings on a beach chair while she went for a dip in the sea on October 15. However, when she returned she discovered her property worth $3,406 missing. She went to a nearby establishment and the accused was seen taking the items on CCTV footage.
He was later arrested by police and a laptop was retrieved but a tablet, sunscreen lotion, a pair of pants, a phone charger, a power bank, a bathing suit, a pair of sunglasses and US$200 were not.
“I want to apologize to the court and the people of Barbados and the industry . . . . I went to Toronto and they drugged me there . . . put some strong drug in my system.
“I make soap and sell to the tourists . . . And I had to get equipment and went about it the wrong way and went and steal. Can I go to rehab, sir?”
However, the magistrate told him that he would get such treatment at HMP Dodds.
“You know the importance of tourism, you selling soap to tourists. You shouldn’t be doing this, you are killing the goose that lay the golden egg,” Frederick said as he sentenced Holder.
