Kings, VandenBoorn win in overtime again

VandenBoorn continues OT magic

Nolan VandenBoorn continued his remarkable success in overtime Friday.

The Dresden Kings’ forward scored in OT for the fourth straight game in a 4-3 win over the Essex 73’s before 248 fans at Lambton-Kent Memorial Arena.

VandenBoorn leads the Provincial Junior Hockey League with 18 goals.

He scored 2:01 into overtime for his league-best sixth winning goal.

Kyle Hachey, Brendan Ritchie and Eric Carter also scored for the Kings, who lead the Stobbs Division with a 10-1-0-1 record.

Kings goalie Brett Brochu made 25 saves. Jax D’Hondt of the 73’s made 19.

William Stadder, Bryce Ryan and Josh Pope-Ferguson scored for the 73’s.

The Kings will visit the Blenheim Blades at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Also Friday, the Canadiens beat the Petrolia Flyers 2-1 in overtime in Lakeshore.

Canadiens goalie Nolan Hakr of Chatham made 22 saves.

Broad seventh in relay final

BUENOS AIRES – Madison Broad of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks swam the first leg for the seventh-place Canadian team in the mixed 4×100-metre medley relay Friday at the Youth Olympic Games.

China won gold in 3:49.79, Russia won silver in 3:51.46 and Japan won bronze in 3:51.74. Canada finished in 3:57.32.

The Canadians were in fourth after Broad swam the 100 backstroke in 1:02.68.

The 18-year-old from Wallaceburg competed in three individual finals at the Games and won silver in the 200 backstroke.

Her teammates in the medley relay were Alexander Milanovich, Joshua Liendo and Kyla Leibel.

Green kicks two field goals

WATERLOO – Windsor Lancers kicker Clark Green of Chatham was 2-for-2 on field goals in a 39-24 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA football Friday.

Green kicked field goals of 35 and 26 yards. He was also 2-for-2 on extra points and averaged 38.3 yards on six punts.

He’s 13-for-17 (76 per cent) on field goals this season.

Charity hockey games in Chatham

Former NHL players are coming to Chatham for two benefit games.

The NHL Alumni will face off against the Chatham-Kent Police Service Knight Sticks on Friday, Oct. 26, at Memorial Arena at 7 p.m.

The Pro Hockey Heroes will play the Chatham-Kent Professional Fire Fighters Association on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Memorial Arena at 7:30 p.m.

NHL Alumni and Pro Hockey Heroes rosters have not been released.

Poole rink .500 at bonspiel

TORONTO – Aiden Poole skipped a Chatham Granite Club rink to a 3-3 record at the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard last weekend.

Lead Andrew Kelly, second Greg Inglis and third Xander Elmes were the other team members.

They lost their first two games, won three in a row and then lost again. They faced teams from Canada, China and Japan.

Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg won the bonspiel. He was the runner-up at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Elite 10 in Chatham recently.

John Epping and Glenn Howard also played at the Toronto Tankard after being at the Elite 10. The Toronto Tankard field included 2018 Olympic gold medallist John Shuster as well.
