Student Union apologises over 'mural of white men' remarks

Emily Dawes, the Southampton Student Union president, is facing calls to step down from her post with immediate effect after she pledged to take down a painting commemorating those who died in World War One

SOUTHAMPTON STUDENT Union president Emily Dawes has been criticised after she said she would remove a World War One mural because it only featured white men.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, Dawes wrote: “Mark my words - we’re taking down the mural of white men in the uni senate room, even if I have to paint over it myself.”

The tweet, which has now been deleted, attracted widespread criticism.

The painting that Dawes was referring to is a 1916 mural that commemorates the members of British universities who died in World War One.
