The new Chad Bowen

Chad Bowen is back with a whole new sound. The 29-year-old singer-songwriter has returned to the island after his short stint in London where he auditioned for the popular show X Factor.

Bajan Vibes sat down with Chad to discuss his venture to London, X Factor, being the youngest person to reach Pic-O-De-Crop finals and how the response has been to his new single What’s Love.

Q: Looking back, how was the experience being the youngest person in the Finals of the Pic-O-De-Crop competition?

A: It only feels like yesterday. I remember when I said I would enter Pic-O-De-Crop a lot of people said ‘don’t do that because it is a lot of work and the critics would be on you,’ and I was like - I am going to do it. Because at the time, I did not know what I was getting into. That year showed me that I could do anything. Especially now, coming out of Juniors and getting into the big arena, it was big and I do not think that I could ever forget that moment. It was a great feeling being with names like Bag especially coming from Junior Monarch and having persons say that I could not do it and I just did it.

Q: Would you like to return to the Pic-O-De-Crop finals again?

A:  Of course, I would give anything to be back on that stage even if it is my last, I want to be there.

Q:  How hard was it to make the decision to leave Barbados in the Crop Over season to pursue your dreams?

A: It was a decision I had to make if I wanted to further my career. When I got there, the response was tremendous. I was not expecting that kind of response. Going for six months opened up my eyes, not just as an artiste, but spiritually as well.

Q: You said it was an overwhelming experience. Can you describe which part was overwhelming?

A: Every time I opened my mouth and sang, people would be like ‘wow’.

Q: Was it a humbling experience to be received as though you are a superstar?

A: Yes, it was a very humbling experience, especially when you go somewhere and people do not know you before you perform.

Q: How did you come up with the song ‘What’s Love’ which currently has over 2,300 views on YouTube and over 50 comments from persons all around the world?

A:  First of all, I needed to be in the studio when I was there and for some reason, I just got inspiration maybe through experiences. We, as artistes, write on experiences and anyone could put any kind of story behind ‘what is love’ because for them it would be different from anyone else.

Q: How long did it take you to write What’s Love?

A:  It took me a day to write the song and then the chorus came the next day.

Q: How are you handling the fame that has come after the song took off?

A:  To be honest, I am just very proud of my work that I could pen something like that and it could get that kind of response. It is always a humbling feeling. That is all I can say. It is an overwhelming feeling as well.

Q: Are you contemplating moving to London to fully pursue your dream?

A:  I try not to think about that because leaving would mean leaving certain people.

Q:  Many Barbadians would not know this, but you recently auditioned for the X Factor. How was that experience?

A: I auditioned for the X Factor and they fast forwarded my audition but I have not heard anything yet. When I auditioned and sent the videos, I was not expecting a response. When they fast forward the audition, it means that they put you forward four auditions [so] you meet Simon and the [others] but I have not met them yet. It was a great feeling. It is a possibility that they can call any time but even if they don’t call, the mere fact that they acknowledge me is a great feeling.

Q: If you were to be contacted, would you be excited to meet Simon Cowell face to face?

A:  I look forward to putting my mark on a stage; not sure if it is X Factor because X Factor is not what people think it is. It is very, very hard. But for me, it is all commercialized.

Q: Outside of being an artiste what does Chad do for fun?

A:  I love the beach and I love coffee. I walk with my notepads and my phone so that if a thought does come up, I can jot it down.

Q: Are there any international or local artistes that you would like to collaborate with?

A:  That is a hard question because there are so many of them [but] I would like to work with Rihanna, Adele, John Legend. In Barbados, I would like to sing a song with Imani.

Q: What are some things you would like to share with the public that they may not know about you?

A:  Well, I like cheeseburgers; I like to eat, period. I like to drink coffee, red and white wine. I am not single and I must have my phone charged at all times.

Q: Where can persons follow you on social media?

A: Persons can follow me on Instagram @chadbowen and on Facebook @chadbowen. (LG)
