For the first time in the history of Spirit of the Nation Show, the eastern parish of St Andrew took home the coveted title of the 2018 Most Outstanding Parish Ambassador.
Last Saturday night at the Garfield Sobers Complex, Zhara Khan and Keyon Watson dominated the competition with a total of 2,191.5 points to steal the title from last year’s winners St Lucy which placed second with a total of 2,168 points. The duo also gained an award for Best Formal Wear in their Lester Welch Design attire.
As the couple received their awards from the Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King, they were shocked and overwhelmed, but mostly elated. Khan who hails from a family that has been actively involved with the competition for the past ten years was overjoyed. He described the prized win as “a dream come true”.
“This is absolutely shocking. I know we put in the work. I know we worked hard all year but never did I expect this at this moment. It just feels like I am asleep,” Khan told Bajan Vibes, adding that this win showed that St Andrew’s community spirit “blazes brightly”.
His partner Keyon Watson attributed their success to their dedication and perseverance throughout the year-long competition.
“We were very dedicated because even though sometimes the road got tough… we still persevered and we still pushed through and the support that we had played a major role. Even when we were down and we thought we couldn’t do it… they were behind us 100 per cent telling us we can do it,” she said.
Third place went to St John’s ambassadors Danico Allder and Oshondy Phillip who received 2,068 points, and they were followed by the St Phillip’s ambassadors Jioke Quarles and Sheraine Seaton who totalled 2,047 points.
St Peter’s parish ambassadors Alexander O’Neal and Alexis O’Neal also took home the Best Costume Award. Meanwhile, St Lucy’s Jevon Yearwood and Jalisa Parris proved to be tight competition winning the Parish Project Award and Parish Project Presentation for Come Leh We Talk Sugar and Salt.
Second place in the Parish Project went to St Peter’s ambassadors who did LEAD by Empowering Through Action and Development and St Thomas’ ambassadors followed with The Cure.
The parish talent was tightly contested with songbird Adrianna Mayers representing the parish of St Michael claiming the Spirit of the Nation Award. Mayers showcased her vocal prowess with her soulful and sultry performance of her self-penned song He’s Mine to receive a rousing response from the hundreds gathered.
Most Impactful Act went to the band The Right Combination representing St Joseph who performed Pan In A Minor and the Most Original Act went to a theatrical piece entitled Save the Earth performed by St Peter’s Khade Belgrave. The Roland Edwards Primary school student was exceptional in his call for Barbadians to play their part in the protection of the environment. When Belgrave’s piece concluded the crowd was on its feet for 30 seconds of applause. (IMC)
