Hawks fourth at OFSAA

HAMILTON – The Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks missed a bronze medal in the junior girls’ division by one point at the OFSAA cross-country championship Saturday.

The Hawks placed fourth with 269 points, based on the results of their top four runners. Timmins Theriault was third with 268.

Emma Pegg led Chatham-Kent with a 13th-place finish. She completed the 5.15-km race in 20:29.1.

Gigi Sasseville was 48th (21:41.8), Alyssa Robinson was 67th (21:58.9), Blair Purcell was 141st (23:26.1) and Vjosa Berisha was 240th (26:03.4).

Payton Sabourin of Chatham-Kent was 46th in the senior girls’ 6.25-km race in 25:13.1. Brooke MacLeod of Ursuline was 111th in 26:41.8.

Talia Vancoillie of Wallaceburg was 77th in the midget girls’ 4.2-km race in 17:57.5. Rylee Stanford of Blenheim was 129th in 18:45.1.

Blades waste big lead

BLENHEIM – The Blenheim Blades led 4-0 midway through the first period but settled for a 5-5 tie with the Mooretown Flags on Sunday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.

Dede Cato scored twice for the Blades (4-8-2-0), who led 5-2 at the first intermission before 266 fans at Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Will Tetzlaff, Kier Cumming and Ryan Malott also scored. Drew Marlatt had two assists.

Blades goalie Chris Dewulf made 33 saves. Jake Wilkins of the Flags stopped 23 of 25 shots after replacing Adam Mino, who gave up three goals on 10 shots.

The Blades led 5-3 entering the third period.

Nolan Farr had two goals for the Flags (9-5-1-3), who outshot the Blades 18-4 in the third. Ayden Letang, Trevor Bogaert and Jake Vandersteen also scored.

Moose’s Griffith stars twice

WINNIPEG – Seth Griffith of Wallaceburg was the first star with one goal and three assists in the Manitoba Moose’s 5-4 win over the Chicago Wolves on Friday in the American Hockey League.

Griffith was the third star Saturday when he scored again in a 4-1 loss to the Wolves.

Griffith is the Moose’s second-leading scorer with nine points in 11 games. He has four goals and five assists.

Raaymakers posts shutout

KITCHENER – London Knights goalie Joseph Raaymakers of Chatham was the first star with a 30-save shutout in a 3-0 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday in the Ontario Hockey League.

Raaymakers has a 4-3-2-0 record, 2.67 goals-against average and .917 save percentage.

He’s 3-0-1-0 in his last four games.

Woodman misses playoffs

EDMONTON – Josh Woodman of Chatham made two defensive tackles for the Edmonton Eskimos in a 33-24 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Saturday’s regular-season finale.

The Eskimos (9-9) tied for last place in the West Division and missed the playoffs.

Woodman set career-highs with 25 defensive tackles, 11 special-teams tackles and one sack in 18 games in his third CFL season.

The Ursuline graduate made 20 tackles – 18 on defence and two on special teams – during a five-game stretch at mid-season.

 

Fordham-Miller makes tackles

LONDON – Defensive lineman Austin Fordham-Miller of Morpeth had one solo tackle and five assisted tackles in the Western Mustangs’ 39-13 win over the Carleton Ravens in a Yates Cup semifinal Saturday.

The Mustangs’ roster also includes defensive backs Zach Lindley and Jake Lindley of Chatham.

Western will host Guelph this Saturday for the OUA football championship.

Carleton scores four points

AMES, Iowa – Senior guard Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored four points in the Iowa State Cyclones’ 73-39 win over Winona State in NCAA women’s basketball Sunday.

Carleton also had four assists, three rebounds and three steals as the Cyclones ended their exhibition schedule with a 2-0 record.

Iowa State officially begins the season Friday by hosting Niagara in the Preseason WNIT.
