Family and friends of Madaline Undine Holder were amazed at the dance moves she put down at the National Union of Public Workers auditorium, as they celebrated her 100th birthday.
For several minutes, the elderly woman pushed her walking stick aside and danced to the beat of the Ruk-A-Tuk band.
With relatives at hand to ensure she did not fall, the centenarian who loved to dance from the time she was a child, rocked and shook her body.
She was happy to see the Green Monkey, Shaggy Bear, and Mother Sally characters in action, as they put on an entertaining show for her and her guests.
And when Mother Sally wined her waist and went down, Holder showed the large gathering that she could go down too.
But before the lively part of the celebrations, the birthday lady got a chance to sit and have a brief chat with Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.
Dame Sandra, who presented Holder with a birthday card, beautiful flowers and shared a toast with her, was impressed at the centenarian’s physical appearance and her ability to carry on a conversation.
Speaking to members of the media after the Governor General’s departure, Holder said it was a good feeling to reach a century.
“I am feeling good today. Everybody love me, nobody hates me,” said a happy Holder.
The woman who gave birth to seven children, one of whom is deceased, said for many years she was a seamstress who turned out many brides and bridesmaids, in addition to making scores look their best on Christmas morning and other special occasions.
Born and raised in Thomas Gap, Westbury Road, St Michael, Holder spent about 27 years in England where she relocated to be with her husband. She moved to the United States after he died and returned home some 30 years ago.
According to her daughter Judy Holder, the centenarian has countless grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
“She is a very peaceful and happy lady. She loves to eat mashed food, things like cou cou. Every year she goes up to England to see her children,” she said of her mother.
Around 200 people attended Holder’s birthday party. (AH)
