Johnstone's goals lead Maroons past Rockets

The Chatham Maroons scored three consecutive goals, including two by captain Dane Johnstone, for a 3-2 comeback win over the Strathroy Rockets on Sunday.

Rookie forward Darby Lemieux also scored in front of 702 fans at Chatham Memorial Arena.

Maroons netminder Tristan Lewis didn’t allow an even-strength goal and made 37 saves.

The Maroons are the second-hottest team in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League with a season-high five straight wins. The Listowel Cyclones have won 11 in a row.

Max Ewart of the Rockets opened the scoring late in the first period on a power play.

The Maroons answered with goals from Lemieux and Johnston 57 seconds apart for a 2-1 lead at the intermission.

Johnstone scored again 1:46 into the second period for his second two-goal game of the season.

Thomas Michaud and Sean O’Brien each assisted on both goals by Johnstone.

Michael Wood scored the Rockets’ second power-play goal at 4:55 of the third.

Rockets goalie Joshua Diamond made 29 saves.

The Maroons (10-2-0-2) are second in the Western Conference. The Rockets (5-12-0-0) are in last place, but they beat the third-place Leamington Flyers 6-5 on Saturday.

The Maroons will visit the St. Thomas Stars on Friday and host the St. Marys Lincolns at 7 p.m. Sunday.
