Legionnaires' rally downs Maroons in third period

SARNIA – The Sarnia Legionnaires scored three unanswered goals in the third period Thursday for a 4-2 comeback win over the Chatham Maroons.

The Maroons’ loss was their third in four games.

Dane Johnstone and Kyle Fisher staked the Maroons to a 2-1 lead in front of 1,193 fans at Sarnia Arena.

Logan Gardner scored the tying goal on a power play at 5:58 of the third period.

Joseph Ferrera followed with the winner at 9:36.

Jon Sanderson added an insurance goal at 14:23.

Maroons goalie Adam Harris made 36 saves. Jakob Knowles made 37 for the Legionnaires.

The Maroons (12-5-0-2) remain in third place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference with 26 points. They’re one point behind the Leamington Flyers and nine back of the London Nationals.

The Maroons have played two fewer games than the Nationals and Flyers.

Legionnaires captain Alec DeKoning of Wallaceburg opened the scoring 1:09 into the first period.

Johnstone replied at 4:17.

The score stayed 1-1 until Fisher potted a power-play goal 19 seconds into the third period. Johnstone drew an assist for a two-point night.

The Maroons were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Legionnaires were 1-for-5.

The Maroons were missing leading scorers Sean O’Brien (suspension) and Eddie Schulz (injury).

They called up forward Adam Pizzo from the Windsor Major Midget ‘AAA’ Jr. Spitfires for his junior ‘B’ debut.

The Maroons continue their busy week by visiting the Strathroy Rockets on Saturday and hosting the St. Thomas Stars at 7 p.m. Sunday.
