McGregor off to Toronto

Basketball player Alec McGregor of Chatham has committed to the University of Toronto, where he’ll attend the Rotman Commerce business program.

McGregor is playing this season at Southwest Academy, a basketball-specific prep school in London.

He helped Southwest win the consolation title at the Henry Carr Early Bird Prep Classic on the weekend in Toronto.

McGregor scored 15 points in a 75-71 win over Toronto Central Tech Prep in the consolation final. Southwest finished with a 2-2 record.

McGregor had 10 points in a 75-69 loss to Vaughan Prep in the opener, scored 10 again in an 88-83 win over Athlete Institute and scored a game-high 15 in a 91-50 win over Bill Crothers.

McGregor won the Dr. Jack Parry Award in June as the top male graduating high school student-athlete in Chatham-Kent. He’d returned to John McGregor Secondary School for the second semester after playing the first semester at Southwest.

Bechard second in OUA

Second-year guard Burke Bechard of Dover Centre is second in OUA women’s basketball with 3.6 steals per game for the Guelph Gryphons.

She’s also seventh in rebounds (7.8 per game), 13th in scoring (14.8 points per game) and 16th in assists (2.8 per game).

Bechard had 15 points and eight rebounds Saturday in a 95-73 win at Toronto. The CKSS graduate had 11 points, three steals and three assists Wednesday in a 74-59 loss at Ryerson.

Johnson third in OUA

Third-year outside hitter Pierce Johnson of Chatham is third in OUA men’s volleyball with five kills per set for the No. 5 Windsor Lancers.

Johnson ranks fourth in points per set (5.5) and hitting percentage (.446). His 70 total kills lead the OUA.

Johnson led all players with 20 kills in a 3-0 loss to No. 3 McMaster on Sunday. The CKSS graduate also led the Lancers with 16 kills in a 3-0 win over Brock on Saturday.

Hope collects five points

WINDSOR – Assistant captain Kyle Hope of Blenheim had a five-point weekend for the Windsor Lancers in OUA men’s hockey.

Hope had a goal and two assists Saturday in a 7-0 win over Waterloo. He also had a goal and an assist Friday in a 5-4 win over Laurier.

Ex-Chatham Maroons forward Brennan Feasey had three assists in the two wins.

Hope is the Lancers’ leading scorer with 11 points in eight games. He has five goals and six assists.

Feasey is tied for second with 10 points in nine games.

Goldhawk leads Lancers

WINDSOR – Meredith Goldhawk of Highgate had a short-handed goal and an assist for the Windsor Lancers in a 4-3 loss to the Waterloo Warriors in OUA women’s hockey Sunday.

Goldhawk leads the Lancers with three goals in eight games. She shares the team lead with four points, one shy of her career-high.

The Ridgetown graduate is in her fourth season with the Lancers.

Kucera leading scorer

WINDSOR – Jana Kucera of Chatham scored a game-high 19 points in the St. Clair Saints’ 80-48 win over the Conestoga Condors in OCAA women’s basketball Saturday.

She also had seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Logan Kucera of Chatham scored eight for the Saints. Jaimi Chauvin of Wallaceburg had seven points and five rebounds.

Football semifinals Friday

Chatham-Kent will host St. Patrick’s at 4:30 p.m. while Ursuline visits Northern in the LKSSAA ‘AAA’ senior football semifinals Friday.

Top-seeded Northern was 6-0 in the regular season. Chatham-Kent, St. Patrick’s and Ursuline tied for second in the ‘AAA’ standings at 3-3.

Chatham-Kent won the second-place tiebreaker by allowing the fewest points (67). St. Patrick’s and Ursuline each allowed 107, so St. Patrick’s won the third-place tiebreaker due to its 23-13 win over Ursuline in their lone regular-season meeting.

Also, the ‘AA’ final scheduled for this Saturday in Wallaceburg has been postponed. No makeup date was announced. The Tartans are hosting the Great Lakes Wolfpack.
