There has been no conclusion to negotiations between the state-run Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Barbados Workers' Union (BWU) over the company's planned retrenchment of 116 of its 230 staff.
Following marathon talks this afternoon into tonight, both sides have agreed to meet again later this week to continue negotiations.
Lead negotiator for the CBC John Williams declined to go into details about the discussions, only to tell Barbados TODAY that “negotiations are continuing” and that the two sides will meet again later this week on a date to be confirmed.
BWU General Secretary Toni Moore, who attended today’s meeting, could not be reached for comment.
But it is known that last week, the local broadcaster said in an official press release that at today's talks, the corporation would be able to inform the BWU as to the number of staff who have opted for voluntary separation and who accepted the terms and conditions, as well as the remaining positions which will be made redundant.
Last Friday Deputy General Manager Rodwell London became the first casualty of the retrenchments when his position was made redundant. Chief MCTV Officer Andrew Greene has been appointed to act in the position of General Manager with immediate effect.
London had been acting as general manager ever since Doug Hoyte was relieved of his duties back in July – two months after the Mia Mottley-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP) was swept to power in the May 24 general election.
