Possible industrial action has been averted at the state-owned Rural Development Commission (RDC).
On Tuesday, General Secretary of the Barbados Workers' Union Senator Toni Moore placed the RDC on notice that the BWU would consider taking industrial action if the state agency did not amend the list of 20 employees it had selected for retrenchment as part of the Government's restructuring programme.
Moore had accused the commission of breaching an earlier agreement regarding the last-in first-out policy, noting that people hired as recently as July were left off the list while others with much longer service were being retrenched.
However, following discussions this morning with management, Senator Moore announced that a settlement has been reached on the matter.
“At our meeting earlier this morning with the management we reviewed the union's challenge, and at the conclusion of that meeting, the positions of the principles that the union honoured were observed. So those challenges were recognized and the necessary changes were put in place,” the union boss said.
Having settled on those who are going home, the union leader announced that they will start getting their walking papers tomorrow and all of them should be gone by month-end.
“It is anticipated that letters would be issued by the end of this week which is just tomorrow . . . and then it would be expected that individuals would start leaving . . . and in any event by the end of this month,” Senator Moore revealed.
She said the union met afterwards with the workers and apprised them of what to expect going forward.
“So our meeting with the staff then was to indicate to them where we had presented challenges, where decisions were taken to support those challenges and to just explain to individuals who would be displaced, what they should expect during the process in terms of their entitlements and payments,” said the BWU General Secretary.
Industrial Relations Consultant for the RDC John Williams, who participated in the talks today confirmed that a resolution had been reached.
“Any outstanding issues were amicably addressed and resolved,” was all that Williams was prepared to tell Barbados TODAY.
