Mustangs lose Vanier Cup

QUEBEC – The Laval Rouge et Or beat the Western Mustangs 34-20 in the Vanier Cup on Saturday.

The Mustangs’ roster has four local players: defensive lineman Austin Fordham-Miller of Morpeth, defensive backs Jake Lindley and Zach Lindley of Chatham, and wide receiver Brandon Tatsu, a former Chatham resident.

The Mustangs won the 2017 Vanier Cup, which goes to the Canadian university football champions.

Gold for UCC wrestlers

TECUMSEH – The Ursuline Lancers won three gold medals and three bronze at the Vortex Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at Tecumseh Vista.

Daniel Crummer, Zach Parent and Ben Parent won gold.

Kayla Smith, Graci Srokosz and Hanna Srokosz won bronze.

Vanessa Devolder and Darius Benoit-Pough placed fourth.

Pegg 14th at nationals

KINGSTON – Emma Pegg of Morpeth was 14th in the under-18 girls’ division at the Canadian cross-country championships Saturday.

The Grade 10 student at Chatham-Kent Secondary School ran the four-kilometre course in 14:48.8. She’s on the Windsor Legion Track and Field Club.

Friesen leads Saints

KITCHENER – Tilbury graduate Frankie Friesen led the St. Clair Saints with 15 kills, three aces, two stuff blocks and six digs in a 3-2 loss to the Conestoga Condors in OCAA men’s volleyball Sunday.

The rookie outside hitter is second on the Saints with 2.04 kills and 2.9 points per set.

Lancers fourth in pool

HAMILTON – The Ursuline Lancers were fourth in their pool with a 1-1-2 match record at the St. Jean de Brebeuf Invitational senior girls’ volleyball tournament Friday.

They beat Bishop Ryan 2-0, lost to St. Thomas More 2-0, and tied 1-1 with St. Mary and Bishop Redding.
