Stairs from Eiffel Tower sell for 169,000 euros

SINGAPORE: A section of stairs from the Eiffel Tower sold for almost 170,000 euros, auctioneers announced, around three times the pre-sale estimate. More than two dozen wrought-iron steps from the original spiral structure, from between the second and third floors of the Paris landmark, were sold to a Middle East collector. The stairs, which stand 4.3 metres high, date from 1889 when the legendary French engineer Gustave Eiffel built the 324-metre edifice. AFP

Billionaire to spend $72 m on journalism institute

Sydney: A billionaire philanthropist has vowed to spend at least AU$100 million (US$72 million) to create a journalism institute committed to “the pursuit of truth”. Judith Neilson said the institute would “celebrate and encourage quality journalism in Australia and the world” at a time of “massive change” and challenges for the news media. “Journalism doesn’t just need critics, it needs champions — people and institutions with the resources to help educate, encourage and connect journalists and their audience in pursuit of excellence,” she said. Mexico top honour for Trump son-in-law

Mexico city: Mexico’s outgoing government said it would bestow the country’s top honour for foreigners on Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, a decision quickly met with derision by critics on social media. Kushner, who also serves as a senior White House adviser, will be admitted to the Order of the Aztec Eagle because of "his significant contributions" to a new North American trade pact agreed to in August, the government said. Washington: India’s Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna speaks during the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi in Washington on Tuesday.
