London: Oxford Dictionaries announced that it has chosen “toxic” as its annual ‘Word of the Year’, arguing that it was “the sheer scope of its application that has made it the standout choice”. Strictly defined as “poisonous”, Oxford Dictionaries said that its research showed that “this year more than ever, people have been using ‘toxic’ to describe a vast array of things, situations, concerns and events”. Indian, Pak authors vie for DSC Prize
London: Indian authors Neel Mukherjee, Sujit Saraf, Jayant Kaikini and Manu Joseph and writers of Pakistani origin Kamila Shamsie and Mohsin Hamid will vie for this year’s USD 25,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. The works of Arundhati Roy, Jeet Thayil, Perumal Murugan and Tabish Khair, among others, failed to make the cut. The winner will be announced at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet which would take place from January 22-27. PTI
Marie Antoinette pendant fetches $36 mn
Geneva: A pearl and diamond pendant owned by Marie Antoinette before she was beheaded during the French Revolution sold for USD 36 million at an auction, shattering its pre-sale estimate of up to USD 2 million. Marie Antoinette, who historians say was reviled by much of the French public over her lavish spending in the midst of a national financial crisis, was guillotined in Paris in 1793 at the age of 37.
