Sydney: A woman has been charged after a “complex” investigation into an Australian strawberry scare where needles were found stuck into the fruit in a crisis that sparked nationwide panic. Queensland state authorities offered a large reward and the government raised jail terms for such crimes after sewing needles were found in plastic boxes of the fruit sold in supermarkets in September. The police said a 50-year-old woman was arrested and charged on Sunday with seven counts of contaminating goods. She faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment. PTI
Surfer bitten by shark in latest Australia attack
Sydney: A surfer was bitten on the leg by a shark off a beach on Australia’s west coast on Sunday, the latest in a spate of recent attacks that saw another man killed. The surfer, aged in his 20s, was on his board at Pyramids Beach south of Perth in Western Australia on Sunday morning when the attack happened. A witness said the man was with another surfer in the water when a large school of salmon swam past them and the shark alarm went off. The attack is the fifth encounter off Australia’s beaches in two months. AFP
Idols stolen from Swaminarayan Temple in London
London: Three precious Krishna idols dating back to the 1970s were among the items stolen in a burglary at a Swaminarayan temple in north London, according to the temple authorities. Scotland Yard officers were called to the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir on Willesden Lane in the London borough of Brent in the early hours of Friday and have registered a case of burglary. The burglary took place just hours after Diwali festivities at the temple on Friday, attended by hundreds of members of the local community. PTI

London: “Game of Thrones” creator George RR Martin has said penning the sixth book in the epic fantasy drama franchise has been an uphill task after the success of the hit HBO TV series. Martin, whose sixth “GOT” novel “The Winds of Winter” has been in the works for seven years, said he has been “struggling” with the new book. “The show has achieved such popularity around the world, the books have been so popular and so well reviewed, that every time I sit down I’m very conscious I have to do something great, “ the writer told The Guardian.
