Christmas lights have returned to the park in the Bonnetts community.
This evening, scores including Member of Parliament for Christ Church West Dr William Duguid was present to see the official turning on of the lights in the park, situated next to the Bonnetts Resource Centre.
A mini concert was also held with performances from members of the community and its environs, including Calypso Queen Aziza.
Dr Duguid told Barbados TODAY that the aim is to restore community spirit, which he said had been missing in recent years.
"This is the first step in bringing back that strong community spirit and the Bonnetts lights that we use to have here. We are hoping next year to have as many residents as possible with lights on their homes, and we are encouraging wider Barbados to come and take in the lights that we have and see the creativity of the people of this community. We in Bonnetts, and I said we because I feel very much apart of this community, use this community centre regularly and we are going to continue to use it to rebuild that strong community spirit once again," he said.
The Member of Parliament who donated the colourful lights along with corporate Barbados praised the young men from the community for the integral role they played in cleaning the park, painting the slides and swings, and installing the lights in the trees.
"We are really proud of the guys from the community," he said.
President for the Bonnetts Empowerment Youth Group, Anderson "Levi" Knight told Barbados TODAY that he was happy to have been able to lead the project, including enlisting the guys from the block to offer their assistance.
"It was not hard to get them to come out and help, because they are willing. As long as I call them they would come. I am a positive leader in my community, so if I talk to the youths they would listen. I want to thank them for helping out with this particular project, they really worked hard," Knight said..
One of the biggest hits of the evening was the presence of Santa Clause.
Santa who shared gifts to many excited children, was kept busy listening to what presents several of the little ones are hoping to receive on Christmas morning.
