Good business, good prospects

Despite the economic challenges facing the rest of the region, one insurance company is reporting “very good” business.

What is more, Branch Manager at Guardian Life of the Caribbean Amado Marcano told Barbados TODAY the company was forecasting a bumper year in 2019 in Barbados.

“It has been a tough ten years in the Caribbean since the meltdown and the CLICO issue. We realize with the new Government a lot of changes are taking place and [there’s the] reorganization and restructuring of finances and so on, but this year has been a very good year for us among all those things,” he said.

Marcano said in recent years the company has been able to see favourable returns, and the outlook was even better.

“I think over the last three years we have had a very good run for business, at least 15 per cent growth every year. We are also involved in a very active selection process. So, as we go into 2019, we expect to have about a 50 per cent increase in our manpower, which should see us having an 80 per cent increase in our productivity. So, we expect 2019 to be a bumper year for us,” said Marcano.

He was speaking to Barbados TODAY as the company opened up its Enfield House, Upper Collymore, St Michael premises for a customer appreciation day event.

Customers and staff had the opportunity to have their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked, win various prizes, get tips on how to improve their health and learn more about the insurance products on offer.

“We know all through the Caribbean at this time of year, and this year in particular, has been a tough year for a lot of people, so we wanted a way to celebrate our customers, let them reap some of the benefits that happened to us through the year,” he said.

“It is to make people aware also of their health,” he added.

The staff and clients also had the opportunity to win various prizes, sign up with at least one membership clubhouse type shopping company, and purchase various items from exhibitors including health and beauty products, teas, beverages and condiments.

Marcano said the response was overwhelming especially during the morning session.

He said Guardian Group would be hosting a health seminar next month as the company sought to play a greater role in helping to promote a healthier lifestyle among residents.

And he wants to see other companies doing the same. “Everybody should be doing something to make sure customers and prospective customers could come and share with you,” he said. (MM)
