Massy Stores is positioning itself to cash in when Florida-headquartered Ross University, moves to Barbados in a month.
The Trinidad-based conglomerate has taken over the Fresh Market supermarket, just a year after it opened at the Villages at Coverley, Christ Church.
“We are very encouraged by what we have seen so far,” Managing Director of Massy Stores (Barbados) Ltd. Randall Banfield told journalists following a tour of the Massy Stores Warrens location.
Massy currently has six major locations, employing 1,200 staff.
Banfield said the latest addition of the mini-supermarket was now a “new model” for Massy, describing it as somewhat of an on-campus type supermarket.
“So it is a learning curve for us, but we are very happy to have had the opportunity to go in there and serve the community and see how best we can serve the students when they get here. The university coming here is a wonderful development for Barbados and certainly will help with the economic challenges that we face,” he said.
Some 400 houses in the sprawling Coverley development, built by the Preconco group, are to be completed by January to accommodate about 1,500 students, 100 faculty and another 200 administrative support staff.
Banfield said Massy would be making sure it had sufficient stock to meet the expected demands.
“We are told that the first set of students will arrive on December 29 and they will be arriving in waves every day until they are all here. We are going to make every effort to make certain that we are ready and they are not disappointed,” said Banfield.
“So when you have 1,300 students descending on you for local bread, you should have at least 1,300 loafs of bread, so we will plan accordingly. We won’t let down neither the Coverley team, Ross team or the Massy team,” he told reporters, standing next to Commerce Minister Dwight Sutherland.
Massy had also embarked on a retail development a mile west along the ABC Highway at Kendall Hill, where infrastructure work is ongoing, Banfield said. But he could not say how soon work would be completed.
“As far as I know there is a retail store going there, not our supermarket, but some other form of retail that I am really not qualified to speak on, but something will happen there during the course of 2019,” he said.
Barbados TODAY has since learned that a hardware store is to be sited at the Kendall Hill location.
