Barbados Pride will be hoping to rebound from their defeat against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes last weekend when they clash with Jamaica Scorpions in the second round of the Regional Four-Day Championship at the Three Ws Oval on Thursday.
Last Sunday, the Pride were defeated by 34 runs in a pink ball encounter at the same venue, a defeat which captain Sharmarh Brooks attributed to the lack of killer instinct by his team.
“I think we lacked killer instinct after having the Leeward 126 for the loss of six wickets in the first innings, we let them off the hook by allowing their last four wickets to add another 120 runs,” Brooks told Barbados Today.
“We got a fairly decent score in our first innings, even though we did not get first innings lead, they led us by a mere four runs. In the second innings we were bundled out for [135] runs. We just did not bat well enough on what was a docile pitch. I think that is an area we need to look at going into the next game.”
Brooks said even though the bulk of his team were young, they needed to play with a lot more purpose.
“We know it is a young team and I guess some on them are still finding their way at the first class level,” he noted.
“Be that as it may, we need to play with more intent and be a bit more positive because if a cricketer goes out there afraid to fail [he will not do well]. On the other hand, if he has a positive a attitude he is more likely to succeed the result will be better.”
Despite the defeat, there were some bright spots for Pride. Experienced left-hander Jonathan Carter scored a half-century in the first innings and also got a start in the second while Tevyn Walcott also produced a fighting second innings knock.
Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh grabbed a five-wicket haul in the first innings while rookie fast bowlers Chemar Holder and Keon Harding also impressed.
“It was nice to see two young fast bowlers in Chemar Holder and Keon Harding bowling so impressive in a pink ball game under the light,” said Brooks
“Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh took five wickets and Jonathan Carter batted well for his half century in the first innings, so we had glimpses of good cricket and bad cricket in the match.”
He added: “Going forward into this game against Jamaica Scorpions, we have two of our senior players -- opener Kraigg Brathwaite and left arm spinner Jomel Warrican -- who are returning to the team after missing the first match because they were in Bangladesh with the West Indies.
“I am hoping the younger guys can lean on them and they will share as much knowledge as possible with these players.”
Brooks said he was expecting Warrican and Brathwaite to play major roles for Barbados Pride throughout the season.
“Kraigg is as a solid as a rock whether he is playing first class or Test cricket and Warrican has always been consistent for us,” Brooks pointed out.
“He is up there with the best bowlers who have played first class cricket for Barbados. Those two guys returning to the team is a major boost for us in our match against Jamaica and the rest of the season.
“We are looking forward to the game against Jamaica. The match against the Leeward is behind us now. We can’t look back. It was a bad loss but there are still nine more games to play in the season.”
