Residents of Sion Hill, St James have come together to beautify their community.
Members of the Sion Hill Community Group gathered from as early as 8 a.m. on Saturday to remove the overgrown bush and shrubbery that was blocking the pedestrian walkway on the bridge by Greaves Road, Westmoreland, St James.
Organiser and president of the Newbury Province Cricket Club, Roy Bishop told Barbados TODAY that concerns were raised about the safety of pedestrians.
“The government doesn’t have the money to come and do the work so we decided we will come together and do it to give back to the community,” Bishop said while adding that the project was initiated to tackle possible theft and assaults in the dimly lit district.
Bishop also said that it was the responsibility of the community to ensure that their surroundings were clean and safe.
“We said this is our community, this is our grounds and we landscape it … we look after it ourselves,” Bishop stated.
“We don’t want to get a situation where somebody gets robbed so we want to prevent it from happening. We don’t want the idea of someone getting robbed and then we say ‘Oh shoot’so we decided we will do it now,” he added.
