Sydney: A surfer was severely mauled by a shark off Australia’s east coast, the latest in a series of attacks in recent months. The 36-year-old was surfing near Scotts Head Beach some 490 km north of Sydney in the morning when he was bitten. “The man suffered a severe leg injury below his knee on his right leg,” a NSW Ambulance spokesman said. Officials said it was not yet known what shark species was involved. The attack was the eighth off Australian beaches in three months, amid public debate about how to reduce the risk of encounters between sharks and the growing number of people using the ocean for leisure. Australia has one of the world’s highest incidences of shark attacks, but fatalities remain rare. AFP
Paris Hilton to showcase her artwork
Los Angeles: Reality TV star Paris Hilton is planning to hold an exhibition where she will be showcasing her “futuristic” artwork. Hilton said her artwork was full of neon lights, crystals and collages. “I’m putting my art exhibit together now. My art is very futuristic and pop, with neon lights and crystals and collages and painting. I draw animals. It’s really inspired by pop culture, it’s really different,” Hilton told New York Post’s Page Six. The DJ and socialite, who recently ended her engagement to “Leftovers” star Chris Zylka, said she is too busy to date. “I’m amazing. I am busy being a boss-babe, running an empire. That is all I have time for. I barely have time for myself, let alone anything else. I am not even thinking about (dating) right now.” PTI
Arctic sea ice decline slows down temporarily: NASA
Washington: The decline of the Arctic sea ice cover may have temporarily slowed down, despite climate change and global warming, a NASA study has found. As temperatures in the Arctic have warmed at double the pace of the rest of the planet, the expanse of frozen seawater that blankets the Arctic Ocean and neighbouring seas has shrunk over the past three decades. The end-of-summer Arctic sea ice extent has almost halved since the early 1980s. A recent NASA study found that since 1958, the Arctic sea ice cover has lost on average around two-thirds of its thickness and now 70%of the sea ice cap is made of seasonal ice, or ice that forms and melts within a single year. However, at the same time that sea ice is vanishing quicker, it is also thickening at a faster rate during winter. PTI
Japan’s empress-in-waiting ‘insecure’ but vows to serve
Tokyo: Japan’s Crown Princess Masako on Sunday pledged to do her best despite feeling ‘insecure’ about becoming empress in mere months, in a candid statement released on her 55th birthday. Emperor Akihito will step down on April 30, 2019, the first abdication in the Japanese imperial family in more than two centuries. His eldest son and Masako’s husband Naruhito will ascend to the throne the next day. “Even though I feel insecure about how helpful I will be when I think about the days ahead... I want to devote myself to the happiness of the people so I will make an effort to that end,” said the crown princess. The Harvard- and Oxford-educated Masako left a promising career as a diplomat to marry into the imperial family in 1993. AFP
