WACO, Texas – Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting for the No. 20 Iowa State Cyclones in an 84-69 loss to the No. 2 Baylor Lady Bears on Wednesday.

Carleton had 16 points in the first quarter and 24 by halftime.

She finished with four steals, two assists and two rebounds.

The Cyclones (14-5, 4-3 Big 12) trailed only 41-35 at halftime. The Lady Bears (16-1, 6-0) pulled away by outscoring them 25-12 in the third quarter while holding Carleton scoreless.

Iowa State will visit Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Kucera first in OCAA

St. Clair Saints guard Jana Kucera of Chatham is the leading scorer in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s basketball with 20.2 points per game.

Kucera scored a game-high 19 points Wednesday in a 64-51 loss to the Lambton Lions in Windsor.

She also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School graduate is in her second season at St. Clair.

Kucera is fifth in the OCAA with 4.5 assists per game. She also averages 7.2 rebounds per game.

Skaters ninth in Canada

Alyssa Robinson of Ridgetown and Josh Andari of Chatham placed ninth in novice dance with 84.39 points at the Canadian figure skating championships last week in Saint John, N.B.

They were seventh in the first pattern dance (starlight waltz) with 14.24, 10th in the second pattern dance (Argentine tango) with 12.79 and 10th in the free dance with 57.36.

Robinson and Andari were seventh at the Skate Ontario Summer Skate – a North American Series event – in August.

Last season, they were 16th in pre-novice dance at the Skate Canada Challenge and won silver at the Ontario Winter Games.

This is their fourth year together. They’re two-time Skate Ontario provincial champions.

Campbell loses tiebreaker

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Oliver Campbell of Chatham has been relegated to the seeding pool with Team Ontario at the Canadian junior boys’ curling championship.
Alberta beat Ontario 5-4 in a tiebreaker Wednesday morning after those two teams finished in a three-way tie with Newfoundland and Labrador for third place in their pool. Each had a 3-3 record.

Alberta and Newfoundland advanced to the championship pool for the top eight teams, while Ontario went to the seeding pool.

Ontario beat Prince Edward Island 11-7 later Wednesday and will face New Brunswick on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Ontario ended pool play with a 12-2 loss to British Columbia.

Campbell is the second for Team Ontario, a Galt Country Club rink skipped by Samuel Steep.
