Warming centres remain open

With an extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada still in effect, warming centres will remain open in Chatham-Kent.

A prolonged period of cold is expected through to Friday morning, with temperatures ranging from -20 C to -27 C, with wind chills between -30 C to -40 C.

Conditions are expected to improve by Friday as milder air moves into the region.

All branches of the Chatham-Kent Public Library will once again be open Thursday to provide a warm location for anyone needing to get out of the cold.

Highgate branch, normally closed on Thursdays, will now open from noon until 5 p.m.

Extended hours will be offered tomorrow at the following branches:

Merlin: 3-8 p.m.

Thamesville: Noon-5 p.m.

Wallaceburg: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

Wheatley: 3-8 p.m.

The following branches will be open their regular hours, ready to greet individuals needing a warm location:

Blenheim: Noon-8 p.m.

Bothwell: 3-8 p.m.

Tilbury: Noon-8 p.m.

Ridgetown: Noon-8 p.m.

Dresden: Noon-8 p.m.

Chatham: 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.

People are also urged to remember their furry friends in this weather and provide proper shelter for their pets.

If not kept in the home, appropriate shelter could include an insulated dog house with bedding such as straw, a heat lamp or other materials to regulate temperature.

Animal control has received 10 calls within the last three days about animals being left out in the cold.

Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership Bylaw states “No person shall allow an animal to remain outdoors during extreme weather, except for brief walks or brief periods of exercise, unless the animal has access to an animal enclosure that will adequately protect the animal from the elements.”

If you have concerns about pets being left in the outdoors, call animal control at 226-996-9969 or Chatham-Kent police at 519-352-1234.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when navigating roads and sidewalks due to the potential for ice and snow formation.

Municipal staff will continue to monitor road and weather conditions and will deploy resources where possible to address these conditions and protect public safety.

The temperatures are causing mechanical issues with trucks used for garbage and recycling pickup and may result in some delays.

Residents are asked to leave their garbage and recycling at the curb and it will be picked up as soon as possible.
