Blades beat Kings in OT
BLENHEIM – Dede Cato scored 4:55 into overtime as the Blenheim Blades beat the Dresden Kings 3-2 in the Provincial Junior Hockey League playoffs Thursday.
The teams are tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven Stobbs Division quarter-final.
The sixth-place Blades tied the series by erasing a pair of one-goal deficits before 453 fans at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
The third-place Kings led 1-0 after two periods on Dawson Winchester’s power-play goal.
Connor Wright of the Blades scored at 1:46 of the third, but Winchester restored the Kings’ lead with his second goal at 5:18.
Steven Funk scored at 9:10 for a 2-2 tie.
Blenheim’s Chris Dewulf and Dresden’s Brett Brochu each made 33 saves.
Game 3 is at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dresden and Game 4 is at 7 p.m. Sunday in Blenheim.
The Essex 73’s beat the Petrolia Flyers 5-1 in Thursday’s other game for a 2-0 series lead.
High school basketball
Daniel Boldt scored 20 points for the Ridgetown Royals in a 58-43 win over the St. Francois-Xavier Chevaliers in an LKSSAA ‘A’ senior boys’ basketball quarter-final Thursday in Ridgetown.
James Robinson added 10 for the Royals.
Jacob Alderdice led the Lambton-Kent Cardinals with 14 points in a 43-32 win over the Pain Court Patriotes in the other quarter-final in Dresden.
Niall Hetherington scored 12 for the Patriotes.
The semifinals are Tuesday, Feb. 12. Blenheim hosts Lambton-Kent and Tilbury welcomes Ridgetown.
The final will be Thursday, Feb. 14.
In the junior ‘A’ playoffs, the Blenheim Bobcats downed the Titans 53-28 in a semifinal in Tilbury.
Blake Tinline had 14 points for the Bobcats. Ryder Panjer-Jongbloed scored 10 for the Titans.
Lambton-Kent beat Pain Court 41-38 in the other semifinal.
Blenheim will host Lambton-Kent in the final Thursday, Feb. 14.
Hawks’ Horney nets three
WALLACEBURG – Kirsten Horney had a hat trick in the Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks’ 4-1 win over the Wallaceburg Tartans in LKSSAA girls hockey Thursday at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.
Reese Parks also scored for the South Division-leading Golden Hawks (5-0-0).
Keeley McCarter replied for the Tartans (3-2-0).
Cardinals edge Tartans
DRESDEN – The Lambton-Kent Cardinals beat the Wallaceburg Tartans 3-2 in LKSSAA boys hockey Thursday.
Alex Cleland, Trent McFadden and Blake Stevens scored for the Cardinals (6-3-0).
Kellen Franquist and Riley Parker tallied for the Tartans (2-6-1).
