Board director post closes after 'robust' response

The public school system in Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton will have a new executive-director-to-be in place by April, as long as the Ministry of Education okays the hire.

The new director is slated to start once current director of education for the Lambton-Kent District School Board, Jim Costello, retires in June. Applications for the position closed late last week, a board member confirmed Wednesday, with interviews expected to happen though February.

An option to relaunch the process due to insufficient applications will not be necessary, Jane Bryce, chair of the public school board, said.

“We’ve had a robust answer to the (opening),” Bryce said. “We will interview a few of the candidates and hopefully will have someone to announce by the March break.”

It will be the first new director of education for the board in nearly a decade. Costello was hired eight years ago, his hiring also approved by the Ministry of Education. They’ll need to sign off on the board’s top choice in March.

The incoming director of education is required to have extensive experience in the public school system, including as a board superintendent.

“You can’t expect somebody to lead the system in curriculum if they’ve never experienced what curriculum means,” Bryce said.
