A small town Alabama newspaper in the US that drew condemnation for an editorial this month calling for the Ku Klux Klan to “ride again” has named an African-American woman as its new editor and publisher. Elecia R Dexter on Friday took the reins of the weekly Democrat-Reporter in Linden, Alabama, from Goodloe Sutton, 79, the longtime owner of the paper who wrote the incendiary editorial. Reuters
Virgin Galactic spacecraft sets new record
Washington: A Virgin Galactic spacecraft has touched the edge of space for the second time in three months, achieving the highest speed and altitude to date and carrying a third crew member on board for the first time, the US-based company claimed. Spaceship VSS Unity — the fifth Virgin Galactic supersonic rocket powered test flight — also carried research payloads from NASA. PTI
Saudi Arabia names Princess as envoy to US
Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has named Princess Reema Bint Bandar Bin Sultan Al Saud as the kingdom’s first female ambassador to the US. She will replace Prince Khalid bin Salman, son of King Salman and younger brother of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. She is the daughter of a former Saudi ambassador to the US, Prince Bandar Bin Sultan, a towering figure in Saudi diplomacy who served from 1983 to 2005. IANS
Celine Dion biopic in the works
Los Angeles: A biopic on the life of iconic singer Celine Dion is in the works. Titled “Celine Before Celine”, the film will be helmed by Quebec-based director Marc-Andre Lavoie, who will trace Dion’s journey before global stardom. The English-language biopic is set for a 2020 production. A separate Dion biopic, titled “The Power of Love” named after her hit song, is slated for a release in 2020. PTI
