Extreme cold plays role in separate fires

Trying to deal with issues created by the recent frigid temperatures was behind the cause of two separate fires on Friday afternoon in Chatham-Kent.

Two vehicles were destroyed after catching fire in a detached carport at a Longwoods Road residence, which caused approximately $80,000 damage.

Crews from Fire Station No. 8 Thamesville responded to the call at 2:41 p.m.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services issued a media release stating the property owner was unable to start his vehicle due to the cold temperature and was attempting to charge the vehicle.

By the time firefighters arrived both vehicles were on fire and crews battled cold temperatures while extinguishing the blaze.

The cause has been deemed accidental.

CKFES reports approximately $20,000 in damage was caused by a fire at a Front Line home in Blenheim on Friday.

Crews from Fire Stations No. 18 Blenheim and No. 11 Ridgetown responded to a call that came in just after 5:30 p.m.

The homeowner reported an interior wall of his home caught fire while he was attempting to thaw frozen pipes with a portable electric heater and hand-held heat gun.

When crews arrived, it was confirmed the fire was contained to the wall and the remaining fire was quickly extinguished.

The cause of this fire was also deemed accidental.

Noting an extended cold snap can present many challenges, the CKFES advises residents to use extreme caution when attempting to thaw frozen pipes.

If unsure, the fire service suggests contacting a qualified contractor to do it.
